If you are preparing for a big move, there is a high probability that you are going to need to get rid of at least some of your stuff. Whether that means tossing it, donating it or selling your items for a small return of money, there are a variety of ways you can downsize your collection of belongings. Depending on how far your new home will be, doing this will actually help you make your move a lot easier in the end.

LetGo

The LetGo App is an app for buying and selling things locally. Similar to Kijiji and Ebay, you can make posts and chat with sellers and buyers  in real time to quickly get rid of some of your old stuff. This is a relatively new platform that is gaining a lot of popularity very quickly and I would highly recommend.

eBay

By now, most of you will have heard of Ebay. Ebay is a simple website that allows you to sell things online to people who live anywhere. Once a bid for purchase has been confirmed, you simply pack up the item and ship it wherever is it that the buyer lives. Over time you can built up ratings from customers to grow your credibility as a seller. This is a great option for you if you are selling specific items and want to get sell them for a good value proposition. The downside is that this can certainly be more time consuming, requiring product setup for each individual item and most likely, individual shipping.

Facebook

Buying and selling used items on Facebook is a rapidly growing trend. Through groups and pages there are a variety of places where you can make product posts or a simple post to share your items. Every city generally has a variety of local buy and sell groups where people exchange and sell their used belongings. If you want to make a post on your own profile this can often work as well.

Craigslist

Craigslist is an online marketplace for selling all kinds of products and services. From ride sharing to furniture and a variety of services, you can find postings for just about anything. This website allows you to make quick and simple posts for your used items. Once posted, simply wait for a response at which point you are able to plan out the transaction with the interested buyer. Craigslist is a common choice for those looking to get rid of belongings at a fast and fair price.

Kijiji

Kijiji is essentially the same as Craigslist, although it is specifically more popular in Canada. As one of the top ten websites in the country, this platform is available on web and in app form, and is a great way to post old belongings and wait for prospective buyers. This website is very similar to craigslist, and functions in very much the same way. It is a simple, easy and effective way to buy or sell used items.

Consignment Store

Depending on what you are looking to sell, a consignment store can be a great option for getting rid of old items that still have some real value. The way consignment stores work is that they provide the seller with space in their store to sell the item and they simply take a portion of the final sale when the item leaves the store. Depending where you live, you may be able to find a consignment store for furniture, clothing, electronics and possibly even other types of accessories. One thing to consider with consignment is your backup plan if some of the items never sell in this environment.

Trade-in Programs

If you are looking to upgrade electronics, or exchange collectible furniture etc, you may be able to find a store that accepts your old belongings as a trade in where you can place the current value of the item toward a new purchase. This can be a simple and convenient way to upgrade your things without having to include them in the moving process. Generally, this will only work for items that are still relatively new, or still possess some sort of inherent value.

Garage Sale

If it is the right time of year, a garage sale is a great way to get rid of some of your things before the big move. As long as you are ok with saying goodbye to your things for small amounts of money, this can be one of the most effective methods of discarding your old things. You will be able to sell a lot of items very quickly, drastically reducing your collection for the move.

Donation

If you aren’t having any luck selling your old things, or you just don’t want to put in the effort to do so, why not donate your stuff? There are a lot of people out there who would really appreciate donations to help them stay afloat. Look up some local donation sites or alternatively, post your things on the free section of kijiji and craigslist. Sometimes your old things just aren’t worth the time and effort to sell, and this option helps you get rid of your things very quickly.
